Augsburg 1748–1757

This book is the Facsimile Edition of the Bible «Historiae biblicae Veteris et Novi Testamenti» («The history of the Bible, Old and New Testament»), which was published in the Klauber printing house in Augsburg in 1748.

The copy of this rare book is preserved in the collection of the Museum of Book and Printing of Ukraine and is not recorded in any other scientific collections of Ukraine.

The book «Historiae biblicae Veteris et Novi Testamenti» or Picture Bible is printed side-by-side, format in folio and consists of 100 engraved plates in a German rococo style presenting main Biblical scenes. The illustrations were made by Klauber brothers from the drafts by Johann Adam Stockman (1720–1783), a well-known in Augsburg painter and engraver.

Перед Вами факсимільне видання рідкісного стародрука «Historiae biblicae Veteris et Novi Testamenti» («Історія Біблії, Старого і Нового Заповіту»), що вперше було надруковане у видавництві братів Клауберів в Ауґсбурзі в 1748 р.

Примірник цього рідкісного видання зберігається в фондах Музею книги і друкарства України і не зафіксований в жодній з інших наукових колекцій України.

Книга «Historiae biblicae Veteris et Novi Testamenti» або Лицьова Біблія, тобто Біблія в ілюстраціях, видана форматом ін-фоліо (в аркуш) і складається з 100 сюжетних гравюр-мідьоритів в стилі німецького рококо, що презентують найважливіші сюжети Біблії. Ілюстрації виконані братами Клауберами за роботами Йогана Адама Стокмана (1720–1783), знаного в Ауґсбурзі живописця, рисувальника, гравера.

The museum copy is preserved in good condition; however, pages 3, 96 and the title page have been lost. The new binding was made for the book; clean sheets were added between the engravings. In addition, the book has lost its original cover.

Музейний примірник зберігся в доброму стані, проте втрачені 3, 96 та титульний аркуші. Книга була повторно оправлена, між гравюрами були додані чисті аркуші. Також втрачена оригінальна обкладинка.

The language of the original is Latin, texts are placed directly on the pages of the book, above and below the illustrations.

In the edition of 2015, the texts are presented in a more extensive version in Latin, translated into English and Ukrainian.

In this facsimile, we have added pages of tracing paper where parts of engravings were outlined. It helps the reader to pay more attention to the sophisticated and multi-scenes design of each illustration.

Therefore, my task was to create a new cover and title page, which would correspond to the style of the era, and to prepare each imprinted engraving for layout. After the new binding was made, the pages in the book were shifted, and the margins around the engravings were not even. The corners of the book were also damaged. As expanded texts significantly increased the size of text blocks, it was necessary to add more pages. Therefore, for the layout of texts of different size, I added small graphic elements from the illustrations in the book. It also helped to examine the separate features of extremely detailed engravings better. As a result, the size of the publication reached 396 pages. The Munken Print Cream paper was used in the book block.

У виданні 2015 року тексти подані в більш розширеній редакції латиною, перекладені англійською і українською мовами.

У факсимільному виданні для звернення уваги читача на окремі деталі ілюстрацій додані кальки, на яких виокремлені деякі частини гравюр, таким чином, націлюючи читача звернути увагу на їхню вишуканість і багатосюжетність.

Тож переді мною стояла задача створити нову обкладинку та титульний аркуш, які б відповідали стилістиці епохи, та підготувати кожну відзняту гравюру для верстки. Після повторного оправлення в палітурку аркуші з’їхали, і поля навколо гравюр не були рівномірними. Також були стерті кути книги. Оскільки розширені тексти суттєво збільшували обсяг текстових блоків, то доводилось додавати аркуші. Тому для компонування нерівномірних за обсягом текстів я додавала невеликі графічні вставки, які були виокремлені зі самих ілюстрацій. Це також давало можливість краще розглянути окремі деталі перенасичених гравюр. В підсумку обсяг видання сягнув 396 сторінок. У книжковому блоці використано папір Munken Print Cream.
